“Selfhood begins with a walking away, and love is proved in the letting go.”

Jack Slavin (Daniel Day-Lewis) is an environmentalist with a bad heart who has raised his daughter Rose (Camilla Belle) on a secluded island. While he fights the developers who want to build there, he also wants more company, so he invites his girlfriend Kathleen (Catherine Keener) and her two sons to move in. Rebecca Miller puts them all under one roof with Rose, who has never had to share her father, and Jack has to live with what he has set going.
