“Nothing is more poisonous than the human heart.”

In tenth-century China, during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Crown Prince Wu Luan (Daniel Wu) loves Wan (Zhang Ziyi), only to watch her marry his father. Then the emperor's brother Li (Ge You) seizes the throne by killing him, and Feng Xiaogang's court fills with silk, lacquer and polite smiles. The film keeps the prince and the new empress circling each other, tied by an old tenderness neither of them can put down.
