The Battle of Canudos

“The bloodiest war in the History of Brazil”

In the backlands of Brazil at the end of the 19th century, a settlement called Canudos grows around Antônio Conselheiro (José Wilker), a preacher many of the poor take for a prophet. A struggling family arrives to join it, among them Luíza (Cláudia Abreu) and Penha (Marieta Severo), while the newly founded Republic sends its army toward the settlement. Sérgio Rezende shows the faith of ordinary, poor people as a thing the powerful cannot let stand.
