Ellie Ballantyne (Beryl Reid) and her sister Joyce (Flora Robson) are two women living quietly in a rural English town, where soldiers from the nearby camp are turning up brutally killed. James Kelly keeps the sisters close to home while the police, led by Detective Chief Superintendent Paddick (T. P. McKenna), look for an unknown creature. The film is about what a family will keep hidden when the people nearest to you are the ones with a killing to explain.
