“Rene Clair - whose genius has created masterpieces...now brings his magic touch to the screen in a new achievement!”

Old Henri Faust (Michel Simon) retires after fifty years as a university professor, and all he wants is to be young again. Mephistopheles appears as a handsome young man (Gérard Philipe) and swaps bodies with him, hoping to get a signature on a pact for Faust's soul.
