Two boys dive into the sea as children, and Jacques Mayol (Jean-Marc Barr) keeps going down long after his father drowned there. As grown men, he and Enzo Molinari (Jean Reno) are rivals in free diving, held together by a friendship older than the competition. Luc Besson builds the film around a pull toward the water that no person in Jacques's life, including Johana (Rosanna Arquette), can fully share.
