The Big City

Arati Mazumdar (Madhabi Mukherjee) takes a job selling door to door in Calcutta's wealthy neighbourhoods, against the wishes of her husband, Subrata (Anil Chatterjee), and his parents, who live under the same roof. Satyajit Ray follows her as she copies her friend Edith (Vicky Redwood), who speaks to the men she meets as an equal. Subrata sits at home among his parents, and Arati keeps walking out the door.
