In 1948 New York, George Stroud (Ray Milland) edits a crime magazine inside a publishing empire run by Earl Janoth (Charles Laughton). When a blonde woman is murdered, Janoth puts Stroud in charge of finding the killer, and he has to cancel another vacation with his wife, Georgette (Maureen O'Sullivan). The assignment sends his own team after the evidence, and John Farrow keeps the whole building ticking around him.
