Dave Bannion (Glenn Ford), a homicide detective with a steady job and a wife at home, wants to know why a fellow cop's suicide doesn't add up. His questions lead to a crime syndicate that the city's powerful men would rather he left alone. Fritz Lang sets Dave beside Debby Marsh (Gloria Grahame), a gangster's girlfriend whose path crosses his, and the two become unlikely allies against the same men.
