Castle (Jack Palance), a Hollywood star, will not sign a new seven-year contract, and the producer Stanley Hoff (Rod Steiger) will not hear no. Robert Aldrich keeps Castle inside his own big house, his estranged wife Marion (Ida Lupino) in the next room, and his agent (Wendell Corey) leaning in with a drink.
