It is 1917, and Jim Apperson (John Gilbert), the idle son of a rich family, enlists in the Rainbow Division and ships out to France. King Vidor follows him from the billets, where he befriends two working-class soldiers and falls for a French girl, Melisande (Renée Adorée), toward the trenches. Everything he has found in France is still in front of him when the order to march comes.
