“Film school prepared Nick for everything... everything but Hollywood.”

Hollywood in 1989 is where Nick Chapman (Kevin Bacon) lands after film school, with a national award for his student film and a girlfriend, Susan (Emily Longstreth), waiting at home. Studio executive Allen Habel (J.T. Walsh) offers him a first feature, and Christopher Guest, in his directorial debut, follows what each studio note asks of the script. Nick keeps saying yes, and he hangs on to his vision while the people around him keep trimming it.
