Abel Davos (Lino Ventura), a French gangster who has spent years hiding in Italy, needs one more score to bring his wife and children back across the border and start clean. He and a partner take a payroll in broad daylight on a Milan street, then run for France with the money. Claude Sautet puts a man with a family and a past on the road to Paris, with the old gang waiting and a stranger named Éric Stark (Jean-Paul Belmondo) the only one who offers him help.
