In 2005, Michael Burry (Christian Bale), a one-eyed hedge fund manager, studies the numbers behind American home loans and decides the housing market is going to collapse. Adam McKay follows him and a few outsiders, among them Mark Baum (Steve Carell) and Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), as they bet against the banks and the ratings agencies, in a film cut fast and loud. If they are right, they get rich, and if they are wrong, they lose everything they have put in.
