The Big Sleep

“The picture they were born for!”

Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart), a private investigator, takes a job from the wealthy General Sternwood to deal with a blackmail matter involving his youngest daughter, Carmen (Martha Vickers). The case pulls him through murder and deception, and into the orbit of Vivian Rutledge (Lauren Bacall), the general's other daughter. Howard Hawks keeps Marlowe in his hat and rumpled coat, the rain running down the glass.
