The Big Sleep
“Meet Philip Marlowe. The toughest private eye who ever wore a trench coat, slapped a dame and split his knuckles on a jawbone.”
London in the late 1970s, wet and gray, is where Philip Marlowe (Robert Mitchum) takes a job from General Sternwood (James Stewart), a rich old man being blackmailed over his two wild daughters. The trail leads from a pornographer to a gangster, and Michael Winner moves it through a city that always seems to be raining. Charlotte Sternwood (Sarah Miles) wants Marlowe's help, and he is never sure how much of what she says to believe.
