An Army payroll has gone missing, and Lt. Duke Halliday (Robert Mitchum) is the man blamed for taking it. He sets off across Mexico after the real thief, joined by Joan "Chiquita" Graham (Jane Greer), who knows the man from her own past. Capt. Blake (William Bendix) trails them both, and Don Siegel keeps the chase moving at a clip that leaves nobody time to stop and think.
