The Big Street

(1942)Directed by Irving Reis88 minRomance, Drama
“Take it from me... A Girl's Best Friend is a Dollar!”

Gloria Lyons (Lucille Ball), a self-absorbed nightclub torch singer, is pushed down a flight of stairs by her gangster boyfriend Case Ables (Barton MacLane) and wakes up paralyzed, in a wheelchair. Little Pinks (Henry Fonda), a busboy she treats with open contempt, takes her in and cares for her while she turns away everyone else. Irving Reis adapts Damon Runyon's Broadway story, and the film is about how much one person will give to someone who gives nothing back.
