Bingo Long (Billy Dee Williams) is the best pitcher on his Negro League team and sick of the owner who pockets the money. He walks out and builds a barnstorming outfit of his own, signing the slugger Leon Carter (James Earl Jones) and Charlie Snow (Richard Pryor), who badly wants a shot at the majors. John Badham films the dusty small-town ballfields in grainy 70s color and lets the clowning and the baseball share the same crowd.
