In Poland in 1970, Bolesław (Daniel Olbrychski) comes back from abroad, sick with tuberculosis, to stay on his brother Stanisław's farm (Olgierd Łukaszewicz). He hopes to make amends for whatever stands between them, and he begins a love affair with a farm girl. Andrzej Wajda adapts Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz's novel around a family trying to say what it owes one another before time runs out.
