“Come as you are.”

The Birdcage is a drag cabaret in a 1996 setting, run by Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) and his partner Albert (Nathan Lane), who is its star attraction. Their son Val (Dan Futterman) is engaged to the daughter of Senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman), and the family has to pass for a straight household before the senator comes to dinner. Mike Nichols fills the club with feathers, sequins and painted faces, all of it waiting backstage for the senator to walk in.
