Orimbelli (Ugo Tognazzi) is a rich, eccentric war hero who befriends Marco Maffei (Patrick Dewaere), a loner with a sailboat, and brings him home to meet his estranged wife Cleofe (Gabriella Giacobbe) and her sister Matilde (Ornella Muti). Orimbelli confesses his love for Matilde, and the household turns into a love triangle. Dino Risi keeps the pace slow and the mood warm, and the film closes on Matilde, sexually repressed, her sister watching her.
