The Bitter Stems

(1956)Directed by Fernando Ayala92 minDrama, Thriller

In Buenos Aires, Alfredo Gasper (Carlos Cores), a reporter whose career has gone nowhere, joins forces with Paar Liudas (Vassili Lambrinos), a Hungarian immigrant, to run a correspondence school for would-be journalists. The two have no real students to teach and nothing to teach them, only a scheme to collect money by mail. Ayala scores it to Piazzolla's music, and Alfredo bets his name, his wife Esther (Gilda Lousek) and whatever honesty he has left.
