The Black Cat

(1934)Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer65 minHorror, Thriller
“Things you never said before nor even dreamed of!”

Dr. Vitus Werdegast (Bela Lugosi) is crossing Hungary with a debt to collect from the man who once wronged him. A road accident leaves him and the American honeymooners Peter and Joan Alison (David Manners, Julie Bishop) sheltering in the house of the architect Hjalmar Poelzig (Boris Karloff). Edgar G. Ulmer builds the house as a place of hard angles and polished surfaces, and the film moves through it with the hush of a place that watches back.
