Dr. Gordon Ramsay (Herbert Rudley) wants to clear his name after a false murder conviction puts him on the gallows in 19th century England. Sir Joel Cadman (Basil Rathbone), a noted brain surgeon, saves him and takes him to an old abbey far in the countryside, where he asks Ramsay to help map the brain. Reginald Le Borg sets the work among patients held under a drug called black sleep, and Ramsay's freedom costs him what he finds in the cellar.
