Why does a college professor's family go hungry while the shoemaker next door eats well? Professor Griggs (Philip Hubbard) teaches for wages too small to live on, and his wife (Margaret McWade) and daughter Amelia (Claire Windsor) make do with almost nothing. Lois Weber watches the household count its pennies as Phil West (Louis Calhern), a rich student, falls for Amelia and starts to see how the Griggses really live.
