In 1950 London, PC George Dixon (Jack Warner) is a long-serving constable close to retirement, walking a night beat he has known for years. Basil Dearden follows him as he takes the new recruit PC Andy Mitchell (Jimmy Hanley) under his wing, while a young criminal named Tom Riley (Dirk Bogarde) moves through the same streets. Dixon is a decent, ordinary man, and the gun violence arriving around him is a threat he has no way of answering.
