In Edinburgh in 1831, the cab driver John Gray (Boris Karloff) spends his nights digging up fresh graves and selling the bodies to Dr. Wolfe MacFarlane (Henry Daniell). Gray is a former medical student with a grudge, and MacFarlane is the man who escaped punishment for the same trade. Robert Wise, working under producer Val Lewton, keeps the story close and tightly wound, with Bela Lugosi (Joseph) circling in the background.
