Lenny Brown (James Woods) and his wife Linda (Sean Young) move to California, where he plans to make his fortune selling tax shelter investments. Then the federal government changes the tax laws, and Lenny owes $700,000 with nowhere to turn. His friend Joel (John Kapelos) offers him cocaine as the lift he needs, and Harold Becker follows the couple's lives from there at close range, never stepping back.
