The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Bruno is the eight-year-old son of a Nazi commandant stationed at a concentration camp in Poland. He wants friendship and escape from his isolated life behind the camp's fence, and finds both when he meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy on the other side of the wire. The two bond across a boundary neither fully understands, and discover that innocence offers no protection from history.
