Michael (Kenneth Nelson) has spent the week getting his New York apartment ready for a birthday party, with Harold (Leonard Frey) as the guest of honor and a handful of friends invited to celebrate. William Friedkin adapts Mart Crowley's play with the same actors who first performed it Off-Broadway. Then an unexpected guest, Alan McCarthy (Peter White), arrives, and the drinks keep coming while the room fills with talk.
