In a Paris household in 1970, Hélène Regnier (Stéphane Audran) is trying to hold on to her young son after leaving her violent husband Charles (Jean-Claude Drouot). His wealthy father Ludovic (Michel Bouquet) wants the boy kept in the family and hires a fixer, Paul Thomas (Jean-Pierre Cassel), to blacken her name. Claude Chabrol sets the custody fight against her, and she is a mother with a child and not much else to lose.
