Five teenagers from warring cliques report to Saturday detention under Vice Principal Richard Vernon's watch for eight hours. John Hughes locks them in a library with nothing but time and forced proximity. By the end, the athlete (Emilio Estevez), the criminal (Judd Nelson), the princess (Molly Ringwald), the brain (Anthony Michael Hall), and the eccentric (Ally Sheedy) have each shed enough armor to see the person underneath.
