In 1949, the Central American island of Carlotta is where a federal agent named Rigby (Robert Taylor) is sent to look into a racket moving stolen aircraft engines. The trail runs through Tugwell Hintten and his wife Elizabeth (Ava Gardner), and Rigby soon meets J.J. Bealer (Charles Laughton) and Carwood (Vincent Price), who both seem to know more than they say. Robert Z. Leonard leaves Rigby alone with his job and the woman it keeps leading him toward.
