Ida wakes in Frank's (Christian Bale) laboratory, a creature stitched together and brought to life, expected to be his perfect companion. She has other ideas: she wants to know who she was before, to claim a self that belongs to no one but her. Gyllenhaal traces her hunger across a gothic landscape of longing and rage, ending with Ida alone in candlelight, her hands reaching toward a mirror that holds only her own face.
