Andrew Crocker-Harris (Michael Redgrave), the classics master at an English public school, is being forced out by poor health and spends his last term clearing his desk. Anthony Asquith follows him through the final days, as he learns his wife Millie (Jean Kent) has taken up with a fellow master, and that the boys and staff have long despised him. Crocker-Harris has taught for years in a manner he thought was duty, and now he has to look at what that was worth.
