Buddy Holly (Gary Busey) and his band, the Crickets, drive to Nashville to record, and the producers there want the sound sanded down into a safer, more polished version. Steve Rash follows them from that studio to the Apollo Theater, where they are booked on the mistaken belief that they are a black band. Buddy is set on making the music sound the way he hears it, and every step toward a wider audience risks his control over the sound.
