The Burmese Harp

(1956)Directed by Kon Ichikawa117 minDrama, War

Mizushima (Shōji Yasui) is a private in Captain Inouye's (Rentaro Mikuni) company, the one who plays a handmade harp to keep his comrades steady. In the last days of the war in Burma, he is separated from his unit and disguises himself as a Buddhist monk to avoid being taken prisoner. Kon Ichikawa follows the soldiers who wait for him and the monk with the harp they glimpse, and it comes down to a grief that Japan was only starting to put into words.
