“He's the cheekiest man in town!”

In the Potteries of the early 1900s, Edward Henry "Denry" Machin (Alec Guinness) is a young man from a working family with a talent for talking his way up a rung at a time. Some of his schemes are honest and some are not, and they carry him toward business success and the company of Ruth Earp (Glynis Johns) and the Countess of Chell (Valerie Hobson). Ronald Neame films it all at a brisk, easy trot, in a light, good-natured style.
