The Cardinal

(1963)Directed by Otto Preminger185 minDrama, History, War
“A motion picture that spans two decades of conflict and drama as it tells the story of a young American and his rise to prince of the church.”

Stephen Fermoyle (Tom Tryon) is a young Catholic priest from Boston, ordained into a church that has plans for him well beyond a parish. Otto Preminger follows his climb toward the office of cardinal, past bigotry at home, the rise of Nazism abroad, and his own entanglements with people he loves, among them Annemarie von Hartman (Romy Schneider). Through it all stands Kardinal Glennon (John Huston), a red-robed figure in the background.
