Twenty years after the death of the millionaire Cyrus West, his relatives gather at his dark, forbidding mansion to hear the reading of his will. Annabelle West (Laura La Plante) is named the heir, though she and Paul Jones (Creighton Hale) must spend the night in the house, where a lunatic called the Cat is said to be hiding. Paul Leni fills the rooms with shadow, and Annabelle has to keep her head while everyone else starts to unravel.
