A break-in at a genetic research institute leaves a trail of deaths, and newsman Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus) starts asking questions the police would rather not hear. His only partner is Franco Arnò (Karl Malden), a blind puzzle-solver who works out the case by touch and sound. Dario Argento puts the two of them side by side, the reporter chasing leads while the old man listens from the passenger seat, and a thin trust grows between them.
