The Ceremony

A wedding is held and the groom never shows. The bride sits through it anyway, and the Sakurada family carries on as though the ritual has not been broken. Nagisa Ōshima follows Masuo (Kenzō Kawarasaki), the clan's uneasy surviving heir, through the weddings and funerals of postwar decades, as his grandfather Sakurada Kazuomi's old rules press down on him and his cousin Terumichi (Atsuo Nakamura).
