In 1931, Andy "Champ" Purcell (Wallace Beery) is a washed-up prizefighter and a drunk, getting by on whatever small bets he can scrape together. His young son Dink (Jackie Cooper) adores him anyway, and King Vidor stays close on the boy's face as he watches his father. Then Linda Carleton (Irene Rich), the mother Dink hasn't known, comes back wanting him, and the Champ stands to lose the only person who still believes in him.
