Billy (Jon Voight) was a great boxer once, and now he drinks, trains horses and raises his young son T.J. (Ricky Schroder), the one bright thing left in his life. Then Annie (Faye Dunaway), the wife who walked out years ago, comes back, and Billy climbs into the ring again to keep the boy. Franco Zeffirelli stays close on the faces of the father and the son.
