The Cheat
In 1915 America, among stockbrokers and charity committees, Edith Hardy (Fannie Ward) lives well beyond her husband's means. She takes $10,000 from the fund she chairs, and when it must be replaced, she turns to Hishuru Tori (Sessue Hayakawa), a Burmese ivory trader. DeMille builds the film in hard shadows and silent close-ups, letting faces carry what words never could.
