Prescott is a young American boy living in a large country house in France in 1918, while his father works for the US government on the Treaty of Versailles. His mother (Bérénice Bejo) and father (Liam Cunningham) are often absent or occupied, and the child is left among a maid, a priest and a teacher (Stacy Martin). Brady Corbet's first film, loosely drawn from a Sartre story, watches the boy's temper harden into the beginnings of a terrifying ego.
