Spermwhale Whalen (Charles Durning) and the other patrol cops of a Los Angeles division need somewhere to put the day once the shift ends. So they gather after hours for drinking and rowdy debauchery, a pressure valve they treat as a standing appointment. Robert Aldrich follows the whole squad, and the longer the nights run, the more they risk losing the badges that give them somewhere to be.
