“A story about how far we must travel to find the place where we belong.”

Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire), an orphan nobody ever adopted, spends his boyhood at a Maine orphanage learning medicine from its director, Dr. Larch (Michael Caine). He becomes a skilled doctor with no license, yet wants a life of his own choosing, so he leaves. Lasse Hallström follows him out to the cider house and the people he meets there, where Candy Kendall (Charlize Theron) matters most.
