“The greatest lessons are learnt when life enters the classroom.”

A year of lessons at a middle school in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, and the teacher at the front of the room is a novelist playing a version of himself. François Marin (François Bégaudeau) teaches French language and literature to a class of students from a rough neighborhood, among them Esmeralda (Esmeralda Ouertani) and Khoumba (Rachel Regulier). Laurent Cantet films almost entirely inside the school, keeping the camera in the classroom with them.
